Characterized by cold winters and warm summers with a relatively short growing season.  Growing season averages around 100 days.

Precipitation ranges from 8 to 10 inches in the lower basins, 12 to 16 inches in some mountain valleys, and 16 to 25 inches in the forested uplands.  Most of the precipitation falls as snow.  Precipitation in the summer months typically comes as thundershowers.

Typical temperatures are:  Summer - 80's to 90's in valleys; 70's to 80's in the high country.  Winter: - 0 to 30's in valleys; sub zero to teens in the high country

Snowfall ranges from about 20 inches annually,  in the basins, to over 70 inches in the mountains.
